Chackbay FD's 6-wheel ATV for woods, storm rescues

Associated Press - December 3, 2009 5:44 AM ET

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - The Chackbay Volunteer Fire Department's rescue squad now has a 6-wheeled off-road vehicle that can go over downed trees and other obstacles after storms - or get to ATV wrecks in the woods.

Rescue chief Josh Falgoust says that during and after storms, the department used to have to clear roads before it could answer calls for help. Now, Falgoust tells The Daily Comet, its members can go off-road with the Polaris Ranger.

Assistant Chief Kully Griffin of Lafourche Fire District No. 3 of Galliano says his department owns one, and used it to ferry fuel after Hurricane Gustav. He says it's safer than four-wheelers because passengers sit side-by-side and are protected by a roll cage.

Falgoust says the ATV holds a stretcher and a small pumper to put out grass fires.
