    Lake Charles Police Department has released their 2017 Annual Crime Report. The report says that criminal offenses were up 8.1 percent from 2016, with LCPD investigating 11,177 in 2017 and 10,341 in 2016. Crimes against persons increased by 1.1 percent (1,871 in 2016 to 1,892 in 2017) Crimes against property increased by 11.5 percent (4,826 in 2016 to 5,382 in 2017) Other criminal offenses increased by 7.1 percent (3,644 in 2016 to 3,903 in 2017) Overall crime clearance r...

    At least 1,124 residents are without power from Pujol Road all the way to Moeling Street near La. 171 according to the Entergy Map.  According to Entergy, a serviceman is working to determine the cause of the outage.     Jurors heard from a man who was robbed at the Twelve Palms RV Park the day that Joshua Touchet was shot and died.

    Witness Clinton Curtice told how there were three men and that one approached him with a handgun and demanded money.  Curtice identified that man as Johnnie Hardman. Hardman is on trial on a charge of first degree-murder.

    A school bus was involved in an accident near the intersection of US 171 and Fruge Street Monday afternoon, authorities said. No injuries were reported, according to Lt. Richard Harrell, with the Lake Charles Police Department. Twenty-eight kids were on the bus when it was rear-ended, Harrell said.     A phone scam in which the caller claims to be a deputy with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office is circulating in the Lake Area, according to Kim Myers, CPSO spokeswoman.     A man accidentally shot himself in the parking lot of South Beauregard High School today, officials with the Beauregard Sheriff's Office said. All students and faculty are safe, said Chief Detective Mark Herford. Herford said left his gun in his vehicle during an awards ceremony at the school. When he returned to the vehicle following the ceremony, he shot himself while attempting to secure the gun. His condition is currently unknown.

    Firefighters rescued a person from a second-story window during a fire on Mill Street. District Chief Charles Lee said that when firefighters arrived at the fire, the "young lady" was trapped on the second floor. Firefighters immediately went into "rescue mode" and helped her escape down a ladder from a second-story window. Crews then began focusing on extinguishing the fire.     A murder suspect is out of jail after his bond is reduced.  Derrick Ryan Small was held on a $1 million bond, but Judge Robert Wyatt cut his bond to $250,000 and late this afternoon he bonded out of jail. He's charged with second-degree murder in the death of Jalen Handy in Westlake. The conditions of Small's release will include electronic monitoring. Small has pleaded not guilty to the charge. The statewide four-year graduation rate increased from 77 percent in 2016 to 78.1 percent in 2017. This is a 12.1 percent increase from the 2008 school year.     Lake Charles police are searching for a driver who crashed into a telephone pole then fled the scene.  It happened on Ryan street, near OB's, shortly before 3:30 Wednesday morning. Police say when they arrived on the scene the driver, believed to be a male, was nowhere to be found.  No word on any injuries he may have received in the crash.

    A police chase ensued after a man asleep at the wheel woke up, authorities say. Deputy Chief Mark Kraus, with the Lake Charles Police Department, said that a patrol officer noticed a man asleep at the wheel in the northbound lane of Common Street at College Street. When the officer attempted to get out and make a stop, the driver drove through a red light and onto the embankment of I-210 before leading police on a two-mile chase, Kraus said.
