Calcasieu Animal Coalition holds garage sale

Posted: Updated:

Putting their best paws forward, pets and people are chasing the good deals at a pet friendly fundraiser. Many local groups are coming together to raise money and awareness.

Finding a new home for toys clothes, and furniture...as well as for some furry friends, the Calcasieu Animal Coalition is raising money and awareness about pet adoption at a pet friendly garage sale.

LAPAW volunteer Sheila Gilley says "October is adopt a shelter dog month. It's a great month to have our garage sale. It just brings extra attention to all the homeless animals that are out there."

Just one of the many homeless animals on the long adoption list is Devon. He finally leaves the shelter to live with his new family

Gilley says, "Devon just got adopted and all of our hearts are full right now. He is just the sweetest."

Devon is a two-year old pit bull dog who has been waiting for this day for over a year....possibly because of the stigma surrounding pit bulls.

Gilley wants "people to know that just because he is a pit-bull...he still has a good heart.  They tend to get a bad rap."

Volunteers say, no bones about it, rescue dogs are good natured and just need a little TLC.

Beth Zilbert, Pet Therapy Project Coordinator for the Humane Society says that "99% of the dogs we rescue quickly forget the pain and suffering humans have given them and they eat up every bit of love and kindness that you give them and they give it back a hundred-fold.

While many dogs stay in shelters for many years, volunteers say that when they finally are adopted, it's bittersweet.

Gilley says, "It's bittersweet, but it's mostly sweet because we're all about finding them the right home and the forever home."

With a little help, every shelter animal will find their forever home.

These local organizations came together to put on this event:

4 Paws

LAPAW

Lake Area Animal Hospital

Humane Society

Hobo Hotel

These groups raise awareness, rescue, and administer pet adoptions.  To volunteer, contact any of the organizations.
