Oberlin School Teacher Arrested

April 7, 2006
Reported by Vince Atkinson

A school teacher might be the last person you expect to victimize a child, but according to allegations being made by officers with the Allen Parish Sheriff's Office, that is what took place in Oberlin. One Oberlin High School teacher is behind bars, accused of soliciting sex from minors over the internet. This controversy all started unfolding earlier this week. Now, many in the town of Oberlin are wondering how this internet scandal all started.

Chief Deputy Grant Willis with the Allen Parish Sheriff's Office said, "The Allen Parish School Board and principal here have been overwhelmingly helpful, but shocked at the same time." According to authorities, 44 year old Byron Pearson, a golf coach and science teacher at Oberlin High School has been arrested. He is charged with soliciting minors for sex over the internet. Willis said, "He was concentrating, the investigation shows now, it looks like 12 and 13 year olds."

Authorities say this was Pearson's first year teaching at Oberlin High School, the same place that is now part of the investigation. Willis said, "We have seized several computers from the school and his residents."

The seized computers are now in Baton Rough at the Louisiana Attorney General's Office. Forensic experts are going over them with a fine tooth comb looking for evidence. For the time being, Pearson remains behind bars. Willis said, "He is in custody. He is still being held. Monday he will be brought up for a bond hearing."

Authorities are not sure at this point if any local victims are involved, and they are remaining tight lipped when it comes to how this investigation all started. More charges could be filed against Pearson, pending the outcome of this investigation. This case will be turned over to the Allen Parish District Attorney for review.
