LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The city of Lake Charles has launched a prescription drug program that aims to save you money at the drug store. It is not insurance.  Age, income, and existing health coverage are not a factor. It is just a discount, saving you an average of 20 percent on your medication.

"I am hoping that it can be a great benefit to those persons, especially those individuals who might not have prescription drug coverage under their health insurance policy," said Lake Charles Mayor, Randy Roach.

The city of Lake Charles is a member of the National League of Cities. That organization entered into a deal with CVS Caremark, who then facilitated in making sure most major pharmacies got on board in this money saving opportunity.

"Nationwide there are over 59,000 pharmacies that are participating. So it is a good program. It has broad support and we wanted to make sure that the residents in our area were able to take advantage of it," said Mayor Roach.

The program is geared toward helping people with little to no insurance coverage when it comes to prescriptions, and in this troubled economy every little bit helps.

For more information you can log on to http://www2.caremark.com/nlc/ for a list of participating pharmacies and qualifying medicines. To find out where to pick up those cards call the Lake Charles City Hall at 491-1200.
