Lake Charles Police are investigating the shooting death of Tonya Major, 21.

Major is from Opelousas and was studying to be a nurse at ULL.

Shantelle Granger went to school with Major and says the ordeal is "shocking, but an eye opener."

Both Shantelle and Tonya were actively involved with UpwardBound, a leadership program bringing opportunities to high school students.

They both went on to ULL to study nursing.

Granger said because she is also a student from Lafayette who moved to Lake Charles, many of her friends thought she might have been the victim.

"I just moved here and I had friends call me because they didn't know who it was," she said.

Sunday morning, Lake Charles Police responded to a 911 call to find Major shot and killed at her boyfriend's house on North First Avenue.

"You never want to hear someone so close to you get killed like that. She didn't deserve it," Granger said. "Her child, how's her child going to feel not having a mother?"

The boyfriend was wounded and taken to a local hospital.

No word on whether he is cooperating with the investigation.

Chantelle says there was a history of violence in the relationship.

"And, I admired her. Even pregnant... She stayed in school.. Stayed focused."

No suspects have been named in the case.  The investigation continues.
