CPSO releases details of coach arrest

October 5, 2006
Reported by Pam Dixon

27 year old Dudley "Trey" Dixon, III, turned himself into the Calcasieu Sheriff's Office Wednesday night after he found out there was a warrant for his arrest. The former Westlake High softball coach was charged with felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile. Sheriff Tony Mancuso says, "It's still a 27 year old man with a 16 year old girl and that's illegal."

Speaking at a news conference, Mancuso said a female student said she had consensual sex with the married coach in a field house on the high school campus in March or April 2005 and also possibly off campus. Investigators say she was 15 or 16 at the time when the relationship began and is now pregnant. Lead investigator Shannon Chesson says, "We had became aware of the rumors. Her parents did notify us in concerns that the child may be Dixon's and we moved forward, started investigating, started interviewing numerous people, probably the whole town of Westlake at this point."

The teen reportedly denies the baby is Dixon's, but investigators say they plan to get a search warrant for the results of a paternity test. Meanwhile Dixon isn't talking to investigators. Mancuso says, "He would not come in, he would not cooperate in that aspect." Chesson says, "Last night when I booked him in jail we didn't even discuss this case because I couldn't discuss it with him. He refused to talk to me."

Detectives also investigated other allegations of improper sexual conduct between another former Westlake High coach and a juvenile student. District Attorney John Derosier says, "Simply because something is immoral does not necessarily mean that is illegal. We cannot prosecute immorality unless it migrates to the position where it is a violation of criminal statute. And that's going to be very important in this case as we will see as we go down the road."

The findings involving the second coach will be presented to a grand jury within 60 days to determine if there is enough evidence for a second arrest.

Investigators say Dixon worked at Westlake High School five years. He and the other ex-coach under investigation were still working at the high school during the last school year. The name of the second coach has not been made public because he hasn't been arrested.
