Animal Welfare Investigation at ULL

February 15, 2005
Reported by the Associated Press

U.S. Department of Agriculture spokesman Darby Hollady confirmed yesterday that the New Iberia Research Center at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is under investigation but wouldn't say what sparked the probe. The center houses about 6,000 primates for medical research by pharmaceutical companies and the National Institutes of Health.

Earlier this month, Narriman Fakier filed a lawsuit alleging she was fired for blowing the whistle on animal cruelty and violations of the federal act at the center. She contends that monkeys died of exposure to the cold, employees burned the back of chimpanzees' hands with lighters and that animals were being anesthetized in groups -- a practice that's prohibited by the animal welfare act.

University President Ray Authement denies the allegations within the lawsuit. He says they've had complaints about the sizes of cages, but he knows of no serious violations reported that had not been taken care of.

Fakier, a 20-year veteran in the animal research field, worked at the center from September 2002 until February 19th, 2004. She is seeking a jury trial and compensatory damages for lost income and loss of future earnings.
