The Poor in Louisiana get Lousy Help

March 10, 2004
Reported by KPLC Staff

A new study says Louisiana does a miserable job of protecting the rights of the poor in court because of a woefully underfunded indigent defense system.

The study, released by the National Legal Aid and Defender Association, blasted Louisiana for allowing indigent defenders to be overworked, underpaid and inexperienced -- all leading to sloppy representation.

The study found a lack of oversight, training and supervision of those entrusted with the defense of the poor.
