A new study says Louisiana does a miserable job of protecting the rights of the poor in court because of a woefully underfunded indigent defense system.
The study, released by the National Legal Aid and Defender Association, blasted Louisiana for allowing indigent defenders to be overworked, underpaid and inexperienced -- all leading to sloppy representation.
The study found a lack of oversight, training and supervision of those entrusted with the defense of the poor.
