While man, if not most medical claims associated with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill have been settled, someone is holding meetings around the Lake area trying to get people to sign up. JENNINGS, LA (KPLC) - A newspaper in Jeff Davis Parish has reported that police chief Johnny Lassiter will step down from his position as head of the department.

KPLC 7 News spoke with Terry Duhon, the mayor of Jennings, on Wednesday and he says that he can neither confirm or deny the report.

Lassiter has been Jennings Police Chief for the past four years. He's reportedly asking to step back into the position he held previously as police lieutenant.

Clearly it's been a tense time to be in law enforcement in Jeff Davis Parish--with recent widespread media attention stemming from the unsolved deaths of eight young women over the past five years, but Lassiter is reportedly seeking the move due to family obligations.

No word as to who would serve as chief, but the mayor has reportedly interviewed at least one potential candidate--a police official from St. Martin Parish who used to work for Jeff Davis Sheriff's Department in the K-9 Division.

Even though neither the police chief or Jennings mayor will confirm Lassiter is stepping down, there is a news conference scheduled for 8:30 Friday morning at Jennings City Hall where rumors concerning the position of chief will be discussed.

We will have complete coverage of that announcement.
