LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Back in 2003, DeRidder High School pitcher Josh Rainwater was drafted in the fourth round by the Detroit Tigers.
He's gotten as high as the AAA level, but he was unable to make a major league roster.
At least, not yet.
Rainwater is currently a free agent. He knows how close he is to making his Major League Baseball dreams a reality.
"It's starting to get so real," Rainwater said. "It's AAA ball. I was in AAA meeting guys who have been in the big leagues for years. Some of my friends, and some of my close friends are making it to the big leagues that I've been playing with for the last five years and they're making it now. It's just an eye opener."
The former Dragons pitcher knows you can't make it to MLB unless you put in a lot of work.
"I'm almost there," Rainwater said. "It makes you want to strive even harder than what you've been doing to make it there, to try and make it to the big leagues."
How will the city of DeRidder react if Rainwater makes the big leagues?
"The support around DeRidder is really nice," Rainwater said. "I get text messages, phone calls, e-mails from just certain people who have my number. They ask me how's it going. They're looking forward to (me) making it. They all hope that when I make it."
"That's always a joke. If I ever play or make it to Houston, the whole town is going to shut down and come watch," Rainwater said.
