LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - It's considered one of the most shocking cases of animal cruelty in Calcasieu Parish. A dog tortured to death with a samurai sword. The man arrested in the case, Arron Simoneaux, has since plead guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals and is set to be sentenced next week.
Simoneaux was arrested January 12th of this year, following the New Year's Eve attack on the miniature chow called "Puppy." Authorities say Puppy wandered down the street to a party and was tortured to death with a samurai sword. The killing took place in front of several witnesses including children.
The Calcasieu District Attorney's Office and animal rights activists are asking the court for the maximum sentence of 10 years.
"People who are inclined to do this kind of thing often have the propensity to do the same thing relative to humans and we always view seriously somebody who mutilates with a weapon on animals," said Calcasieu District Attorney John DeRosier.
"Statistics show that in 85% of the cases where there has been violence against an animal that there has been violence against women and children in a home. In this particular case there wasn't just a private act of violence this was a public act of a very brutal and horrific act of violence done in front of neighbors and children," said Beth Zilbert, animal rights activist.
Simoneaux is set to be sentenced next Wednesday by Judge Kent Savoi.
