CAMERON, LA (KPLC) - The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana in partnership with the Gulf Coast Soil and Water District continues a marsh restoration project along Cameron Parish at Martin Beach.

Twenty volunteers came out to plant a variety of plant species with five different rows at a foot spacing along the coast line.

"Today we've been out here since about eight this morning, and we've planted about 2,500 plants," says Natalie Snider, Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana Director.

Planting grass along the Martin Beach Coastline will create sand dunes in order to protect the coast from future erosion.

"We do have dunes behind us, and they offer protection to the marshes, to the infrastructure, as well as to our community," says Snider.

The project is also expected to increase diversity and boost natural regeneration.

Volunteers today hope the project will also inform the public about coastal restoration as well.

"We hope to bring the people out here, who don't know about the projects we do, so that they'll get a better understanding of where their money goes to save the coast," says Jaden Ardoin.

The restoration project will run through Tuesday, July 28th.

By then workers hope to have planted ten thousand plants along the coast.
