LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Three people who have autism have a brand new home. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to commemorate the opening. One by one, people from the community filed in to get a closer look at the brand new, fully furnished home, ready to go for when its new tenants are ready to move in.

"We are so excited. It has been a long project, but the community has been so helpful in raising the money for this," said Geri Landry, President of Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana.

"We have a wonderful caring spirit in Southwest Louisiana. This is just another example of how people pulled together to make something really nice. And to make something that is really important to the residents that will live here.

"I am getting older and I know that Kim needs a good place to go. I wanted to make sure she moved out of our house and into a permanent place for her to live, while I could still make sure it was the right place for her," said Susie Stretton.

Each person that comes to live here will have their own bedroom, equipped with their own bathroom. This will allow them to have a more independent live style and receive the care they need.

While this is the first of its kind for the lake area, they hope it is a sign of more to come.
