State high court declines to hear Michael Harris appeal

DERIDDER, LA (KPLC) - The State Supreme Court has denied a request for an appeal of a ruling removing Michael Harris from the DeRidder City Council.

The state high court announced its decision on its website.

Judge Erick Harrington, of the 36th Judicial District Court, ruled in October that Harris was ineligible for the City Council because, though he owns a house inside the city limits, he made his home at a house outside the city limits.

A three-judge panel at the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal upheld Harrington’s ruling.

Harris had asked the state Supreme Court to review the lower courts’ rulings.

Harris was elected councilman at large last year.

A spokesperson for the DeRidder City Council said the city is waiting for word from the Secretary of State’s Office about what will happen to the councilman at large position.
