FRISCO, Texas—McNeese softball doesn’t begin its season until Feb. 7, but the Cowgirls are receiving pre-season honors as three players have been named to the 2019 Southland Conference Preseason team, released by the league office today.
Senior Outfielder Justyce McClain and juniors Alexandria Saldivar (designated player and Alexsandra Flores (pitcher) are the McNeese representatives on the 24-player team. McClain and Saldivar were named to the first team while Flores was a second team selection.
McClain, the native of Phoenix, Arizona, led McNeese and the SLC with a .417 batting average, 61 runs, and 85 hits. She also ranked third in the nation in batting average, sixth in on base percent, seventh in stolen bases and runs per game. McClain was a SLC, All-Louisiana, and All-Region first team selection last season.
Saldivar, the Princeton, Texas product was fourth on the team with .297 batting average along with a .469 slugging percent, 43 hits, six home run, seven doubles and 39 RBI in her designated hitter role as a sophomore. She was named to the 2018 SLC All-tournament team as well as first team All-Louisiana.
Flores hails from Lufkin, Texas and appeared in 40 games, leading the Cowgirls with 19 wins as a sophomore. She led the team with a 3.02 ERA, 176 innings pitched, and 92 strikeouts along with 15 complete games and four shutouts. Flores was second in the league in wins, third in appearances, fifth in innings pitched, seventh in strikeouts, and ninth in ERA. She was named to the SLC All-tournament team and honorable mention All-SLC.
