Man arrested for attempted murder after allegedly shooting girlfriend

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The Lake Charles Police Department is investigating a shooting, according to Lt. Kevin Kirkum.

Joseph Leroy Collins, 52, of Lake Charles was arrested after allegedly shooting his girlfriend. He is facing a charge of attempted second-degree murder.

Kirkum tells us the suspect and his girlfriend got into an argument that became physical. A gun was produced and shots were fired, striking the girlfriend twice in the leg. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Three children were also present at the time of the shooting.

Collins fled the scene but later turned himself into police. His bond is set at $350,000.

The investigation is ongoing.

The responding officer was PFC. Samuel Clouse and the lead investigator is Det. Willie Fontenot.
