BASILE, LA (KPLC) - A Basile man riding on a moped was killed when he was struck from behind on U.S. 190 Tuesday night, authorities said.
Maritan Romero, 56, was traveling west in the right lane of U.S. 190, near La. 3068, in Evangeline Parish shortly after 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, according to Trooper Thomas Gossen, spokesman for Louisiana State Police Troop I.
Teresa Henry, 21, of Eunice, who was traveling west in a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville, struck the 2018 Cabo Cruiser electric moped Romero was driving from behind, ejecting him, Gossen said. Romero, who was wearing a DOT-approved helmet, came to rest in the north ditch and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Evangeline Parish Coroner’s Office.
Gossen said impairment is not suspected at this time but standard toxicology results are pending.
