Appeals court upholds lower court decision to remove Michael Harris from DeRidder city council

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal has upheld a lower court’s decision to declare Michael Harris' seat on the DeRidder City Council vacant.

While Harris owns houses inside outside the DeRidder city limits, 36th Judicial District Court Judge Eric Harrington ruled in October that evidence showed that Harris made his home at the house outside of the city limits.

A three-judge panel at the 3rd Circuit on Thursday affirmed the decision.

Harris said in a statement: “The fact that a well seasoned outgoing politician will inform me of this local ordinance after I won the election disturbs me, but my faith is strong and I will abide by the law. I love my city and will continue to serve in any capacity to make it a great place to live for all people.”
