LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - With the Mega Millions jackpot surging up to $1 billion someone’s life could drastically change at 11 p.m. ET tonight.
Though with more and more people rushing to stores to grab tickets for the largest Mega Millions jackpot ever someone’s odds of winning aren’t great.
How likely are you to win?
Well, Aaron Montgomery, assistant professor of mathematics at Baldwin Wallace University says that your odds of winning are less than some of the following scenarios. Having President Donald Trump follow your Twitter account if he chooses one account randomly from all accounts worldwide. Being in a room with nine strangers and discovering that you were all born on the same day of the week. And everyone’s favorite, being struck by lighting.
Of course you can always increase your chances by buying multiple tickets though it is possible to win with just one. To date the largest Mega Millions prize won on a single ticket was the last time the jackpot was hit giving $543 million to someone in California on July 24th, 2018.
It should also be noted that there has never been a Mega Millions Jackpot winner from Louisiana even though our state joined the Mega Millions drawings back in November 2011.
But don’t let that get you down. There have been 11 Mega Millions winners in the Lake Charles-Lafayette area with largest prize won being $20,000.
