LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The McNeese Women’s Basketball team hit the hardwood for the first time this season. Not against an opponent, but themselves. The Pokes hosted “McNeese Madness” tonight to give fans an opportunity to get a glimpse of this year’s team. The Cowgirls were picked to finish 8th at Southland Media Day’s last week, but head coach Kacie Cryer believes this year’s squad, with a lot of new faces, will exceed those expectations.
“I think it’s something that we can use to motivate us everyday and we have a lot of new faces. We have eight new faces and these kids weren’t a part of what happened last year so it’s a great opportunity for them to set their own way”, Cryer said.
McNeese has plenty of talent to replace, especially in the rebounding department. The Cowgirls lost 77 percent of their production on the boards as the Pokes added eight new players to the fold. This will be a new look McNeese team.
“We take a lot of pride in rebounding, offense and defense.”, junior shooting guard Reagan Bolton said.
“That’s always been a strength for us is rebounding. When we were recruiting this class that’s something we obviously went after because we knew we had to replace it and we feel that we did a good job with that. We’re just excited to see what this group can do”, Cryer added.
There wasn’t much ball played tonight with the game only being two 10- minute quarters, but Cryer saw enough from her girls that has her looking forward to the Lady Pokes season opener in just a few weeks.
“I think tonight was great. Having the opportunity to play in front of people, and we had a great crowd. We’re so thankful for everybody showing up tonight, but I think that really helped us prepare for November 9th when we take on a really tough Grambling team”, Cryer said.
