Astros take on Red Sox in Game 5

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - After a disheartening loss Wednesday, the Houston Astros are looking to stay alive in Minute Maid Park tonight at 7:09 p.m.

The Red Sox are up 3-1 in the American League League Championship Series after a controversial call in Game 4. At the bottom of the first inning, Jose Altuve, Houston’s second baseman, hit a deep drive to the wall. Boston’s Mookie Betts leaped high above the seven-foot outfield wall while fans attempted to catch the ball. After hitting the fan’s hands, the ball bounced back onto the field. Right field umpire Joe West ruled the fans interfered with Betts' opportunity to make the catch and ruled Altuve out.

The MLB rulebook states "3.16: If spectator interference clearly prevents a fielder from catching a fly ball, the umpire shall declare the batter out.”

The rule further states, “No interference shall be allowed when a fielder reaches over a fence, railing, rope or into a stand to catch a ball. He does so at his own risk.”

The Astros disagreed with the official’s ruling stating that Betts reached into the stands making it a home run and that they were cheated out of a possible victory.

The Astros will need to win tonight’s game as well as both games this weekend in order to return to the World Series.
